Chowmahalla Palace

Chowmahalla Palace, one of the most magnificent and enchanting palaces in Hyderabad, was open to the public in the year 2008. It was once the center of Hyderabad from where the Nizams ruled Hyderabad state for over 200 years.

In Urdu, Chow means four and Mahalat means palaces, hence the name Chowmahallat. The 220-year-old splendid complex is a galaxy of four palaces and the famous Khilwat Mubarak or the Durbar Hall was considered as the seat of power of the Nizams.

Its architecture is a mysterious blend of Ottoman, Persian & Indian style reflecting the origins of the city and its rulers both Qutub Shahi Dynasty & Nizams. In a country that is full of palaces and great cities, It is this kind of architectural accomplishment that gives a unique cultural heritage to the city that already has a great history.

The Palace was built by Salabat Jung, third son of the first Asaf Jah, Nizamul Mulk Mir Qamaruddin Ali Khan who served as the Moghal subedar (governor) of the Deccan region. The palace was the venue for the coronation of many Nizams. The investiture of Prince Mukarram Jah as successor to his grandfather Mir Osman Ali Khan was held in this palace in 1967.

The complex consists of two coutyards with elegant palaces, the grand khilwat
(the Durbar Hall),fountains and gardens. khilwat mubrarakis the heart of the palace. The palaces are named Afzal mahal,Mahtab mahal,Taniyar mahak and Aftab mahal.Of these Afzal mahal, a two storeyed building is the most imposing.the grand pillared Durbar Hall has a pure marble platform on which the Taqt e nishan or royal seat was laid.
