Budha Statue

In general, ‘Buddha’ means ‘Awakened One’, someone who has awakened from the sleep of ignorance and sees things as they really are. Buddha's original name was Siddhartha. It meant one who had accomplished his aim. Gautama was Siddhartha's family name. Siddhartha was known all over the world as Buddha, the Enlightened. He was also known by the name of Sakhya Muni, which meant an ascetic of the Sakhya tribe.

The Buddha Statue in Hyderabad is strewn from a single piece of stone and is famed to be the largest monolithic Buddha statue in India. The statue found its place of fame in the middle of the Hussain Sagar Lake on the Gibraltar Rock in Hyderabad. The statue measures up to a height of 18 meters tall and weighs 350 tones. The Buddha Statue (Middle of Hussain Sagar Lake) was completed in 1972 CE.


The Hussain Sagar is a huge lake amidst the city, constructed in 1562 A.D. The Tank Bund interlinks the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad, the wide road on the bund steam lined with lawns and 33 statues of various famous personalities of the State along the bund of the lake. The Buddha Statue (Middle of Hussain Sagar lake), is well laid out in the Lumbini Park. The Hussain Sagar is the cultural link between Hyderabad and the Secunderabad. The Hussain Shah Wali was the maker of the lake during the time of the famous builder Ibrahim Quli Qutb Shah. The lake was made with a view to fight the water crisis of the people.
The City has a vast repertoire of places to make you get the very best of your sojourn, the city boasts of several historical monuments. The beautiful place has the NTR memorial, the Lumbini Park, the Hyderabad Boat Club, a flyover is nearing the completion on one side of tank Bund, while the Secunderabad Sailing Club, Sanjeeviah Park and the resurrected Hazrat Saidani Ma Saheba tomb, are on the Secunderabad side of the lake, and all of which are appealing to the tourist. The cynosure of all Tourist spots is the massive statue of the Buddha at the center of the lake. All around the lake you would get benches to sit and watch time flow by.
